The quarantine measures put in place to limit the spread of COVID-19 have led to the closing of museums in several countries around the world, forcing people to stay home for their own safety and that of others. Isolation can have serious effects on mental health, leading to a feeling of helplessness that can be very unsettling - and not enough Netflix binge-watching can solve it. However, recent studies confirm that museum visits, arts and culture can help us unwind and de-stress, distracting us from the flow of information related to the illness.

Although the quarantine limits the opportunities for museums to reach their audiences, several institutions are showing great creativity and resilience by harnessing the power of social media. And ICOM is here to help!

Is your museum organising
digital outreach activities?

Let us know!

With the hashtag #MuseumsAndChill we are launching a social media campaign to promote the activities of museums that are reaching their audiences at home, and to provide other institutions with tools and ideas to do the same. Contact the ICOM Secretariat at icom.network@icom.museum to let us know how to chill together through the quarantine, and don't forget to tag us and use the hashtag when sharing your activities on social media!
International Museum Day 2020 goes digital!

Nothing is stopping #IMD2020 to carry on its values of inclusion and promote the role of museums in society. Visit the IMD website to find all the available materials and don't forget to add your events to the interactive map. Digital and online events are more than welcome!
Send us the material you are preparing for IMD2020: filled posters, short presentation videos, ideas for interactive (virtual) activities to be done at home during International Museum Day. And don't forget to put inclusion first and consider the diversity of your audiences: through which channels can you reach them? What activities could they enjoy?

At the secretariat we started to fill ours: do you recognize anyone? :)
We want to hear
from you!

Now more than ever a strong network can help our members navigate through a difficult time. Send us your proposals for ICOM Voices with case studies or articles that you think could be useful for other museum professionals to carry out digital activities and interact with their publics remotely.
