Today Apple invited the New Museum to collaborate on a new Augmented Reality initiative to create a series of experiential AR works that would be free to the public.

The New Museum selected a distinguished group of artists, many of whom have a long history with the Museum: Nick Cave, Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg, Cao Fei, John Giorno, Carsten Höller, and Pipilotti Rist. The New Museum worked with the artists and Apple to help choreograph the [AR]T Walk—a guided walking tour of six AR art pieces starting at select Apple Stores around the world—while also advising on the development of the [AR]T initiative overall. Additionally, Apple invited NEW INC member and educator Sarah Rothberg to create an in-store session that teaches people how to create AR experiences and invited Nick Cave to create an AR art installation, both available in all Apple Stores around the world.

The New Museum is a recognized leader in the art and tech space with special expertise and commitment to both new art and new technology. Our leadership can be traced from the Media Z Lounge, to the Museum’s affiliate organization Rhizome which champions born-digital art, to NEW INC, the first museum-led incubator for art, technology, and design, to our exhibitions and public programs.

All three components of the [AR]T initiative will be available to the public beginning August 10, 2019, with pre-registration for the interactive [AR]T Walks and [AR]T Labs opening on July 30, 2019.

[AR]T Walks are available at:
Apple Fifth Avenue, New York
Apple Union Square, San Francisco
Apple Covent Garden, London
Apple Marché Saint-Germain, Paris
Apple Causeway Bay, Hong Kong
Apple Shinjuku, Tokyo

[AR]T Walk: Augmented Realities Co-curated with New Museum
These experiential guided walks take participants through iconic locations in San Francisco, New York, London, Paris, Hong Kong and Tokyo as they encounter works by world-renowned artists, most of whom are working in AR for the first time. Works by Nick Cave, Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg, Cao Fei, John Giorno, Carsten Höller, and Pipilotti Rist connect participants to public spaces such as London’s Trafalgar Square, San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Gardens or New York’s Grand Army Plaza in Central Park.

[AR]T Lab: AR Experiences Co-created with Sarah Rothberg
Created in partnership with NEW INC member, artist and educator Sarah Rothberg, this Today at Apple session at all Apple Stores gets attendees hands-on with whimsical objects and immersive sounds created by Rothberg. Using Swift Playgrounds, anyone can learn how to create their own AR experiences in this 90-minute [AR]T Lab.

[AR]T at the Apple Store: Nick Cave’s “Amass”
Visitors can come into any Apple Store worldwide and experience artist Nick Cave’s AR piece “Amass.” Using the [AR]T Viewer in the Apple Store app, users can initiate Cave’s interactive installation, which takes the viewer on a journey to view and collect “Ikon Elements” and experience a universe of positive energy.
