Project management (PM4R)

The Leadership in Managing Development Projects course has been designed and organized by the Inter-American Institute for Economic and Social Development (INDES). It is offered as part of the Inter-American Development Bank's (IDB) Project Management for Results (PM4R) initiative, which seeks to improve the skills of project teams comprising members of executing agencies, IBD staff and people from liaison bodies.

This course is designed to be used as a process for reflecting, learning and practicing in order to strengthen the interpersonal skills needed to effectively address the communication, negotiation and leadership challenges which participants face throughout every stage of managing a development project.

The course begins with an in-person introductory workshop and then continues with 7 weeks of virtual classes making up 2 learning modules. These are structured into units, the contents of which are reinforced with a series of mandatory individual and group activities which participants undertake under the guidance of a tutor. Once the virtual phase is complete, each team must prepare a group task, which they present when they attend the final workshop. 

To improve the Project Plan execution (PEP/POA) of the different teams who are implementing development projects, by strengthening their knowledge and developing their interpersonal skills so they can address the communication, negotiation and leadership challenges which arise in the management of development projects.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:  

  • develop a communication strategy, bearing in mind the characteristics of the key stakeholders and the context of the development project;
  • prepare and lead a negotiation in a rational and effective manner; and 
  • communicate in order to exercise an effective influence on the execution of the project plan.
