The recipient of this badge successfully completed the online course from INDES/IDB "Principles of reviewing Environmental Impact Assessment – PREIA" comprising 5 modules studied over 6 weeks. They can now to effectively and efficiently review ESIA documents. Participants will learn international best practices and strengthen their economic, environmental, and social decision-making skills and knowledge in the specific context of a proposed action or project. This badge is awarded to the participant who obtained the highest grade in their edition. Only one Valedictorian badge was awarded per course edition. The topics included in the course were: The Environmental Impact Assessment Process; Reviewer’s Roles and Responsibilities in the EIA Process; Approaches to Review: What to Look For when Reading an Evaluation Impact Assessment; Purpose and Need; Project Alternatives; Description of the Environmental Setting: Establishing the Baseline; Potential Environmental Impact; Mitigation and Monitoring Measures: The Environmental and Social Management Plan; Preparing and communicating the reviewer comments; and Reviewer resources by country. During this course, the participant completed individual exercises, group activities, contributed to discussion fora, and participated in a test to evaluate how the course changed their understanding. All activities were monitored and evaluated by a tutor. Having undertaken this course, the participant is now able to: Using a summary diagram, describe the stages of the EIA process to support the review process and decision making. Through analysis of the legal, institutional, organizational and personal context, understand the reviewer’s role and approach to participating in the stages of the EIA review process and decision making, Apply the reviewer’s approach to analyze and interpret each element of an EIA document to determine the level of compliance or conformity with the applicable rules, standards, or best practices. Synthesize the results of the review the project’s environmental impact by evaluating the EIA document and communicating clearly with different audiences. Recognize the different contexts of EIA review in Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries, to incorporate specific knowledge and best practices in the different settings. Note: Participants will receive a confirmation email with the Certificate. The grade can also be seen in their profile and can be added to social media profiles.
